Buying a $4,000 sofa online is a big decision. Buying a complete living room — sofa, chairs, tables, lighting — is bigger. We're frequently asked whether to commit to a whole-room purchase upfront or build it gradually. Both can work. Here's how to think about it.
The case for buying the room as a set
When you furnish a room as a single project, three things happen that don't happen when you piece it together over months:
- Cohesion. The pieces are chosen to work together. Scale, proportion, color, and material all align because you (or your designer) made all the decisions at once with the whole picture in view.
- Single delivery. One delivery fee, one delivery day, one assembly visit. At Central Designs, large furniture orders over $2,999 ship with free white-glove delivery anywhere in Ontario or Quebec — even if there are five pieces in the order. Building it up gradually means five delivery fees.
- Faster final result. The room is done in one or two months instead of two years. You actually get to live in the finished space.
The case for buying gradually
There are also real reasons to take it slow:
- Budget. A complete living room at premium tier ($1,500 – $5,000 per piece) easily lands at $10,000 – $20,000. If that's a stretch, gradual is the only way.
- Style evolution. Some people genuinely don't know what they want until they live with one piece. The sofa teaches them what the rest should look like.
- Apartment-to-house transitions. If you're moving in 1–3 years to a bigger space, buying gradually means you can scale your purchases to the eventual room.
Our recommendation: anchor first, then build
The approach that works best for most of our customers is to start with the anchor piece — the sofa in a living room, the dining table in a dining room, the bed in a bedroom — and let it dictate everything else.
The anchor sets the style direction, the color palette, and the scale of the room. Once it's in place, every other piece becomes an easier decision.

A note on shipping math
If you do go gradual, here's how to time it to avoid paying multiple delivery fees: bundle anything you order in the same calendar month into a single order if possible. We charge one delivery fee per order, not per item. A sofa + dining table + bed in one order is one $149–$349 delivery fee, not three.
